FreeBSD would be a good choice if StemOS was intended to be installed only on the Steam Machines (Or on a single machine, like Sony did for the PS4), but remember that SteamOS can also be installed over a PC. I think FreeBSD is great on a machine with compatible and optimized hardware, but Linux has much more compatibility. I really love FreeBSD, but thet's not what Valve is looking for.

I think if Valve wants to make SteamOS successful they need to look into creating a DirectX wrapper of sorts otherwise I really don't see much success drawing console gamers into buying a Steam Machine running SteamOS if they still need a strong Window's based gaming PC for streaming popular titles to their Steam Machine. But I don't think you need to think that alchemy is 'evil.' It's just pointless because you can obviously never do as well in a closed environment as you can with open scientific methods.' In my experience with Linux and WINE for old Windows gaming and music production.I've always found old software (Interstate '76 and Mixman Studio for example) that wouldn't run in WINE properly. Like science, Open Source allows people to build on a solid base of previous knowledge, without some silly hiding.
